Growing up, toyomansi was something I always had at the dinner table. It was always tmy go-to condiment that balanced out the flavors of any dish I poured it over and even now as an adult, I absolutely love it.
Why This Recipe Works
- It’s Versatile. Pair it with fish, grilled meats, porridge–toyomansi has a place just about anywhere.
- Easy to Make. 5 minutes is all you need!
- Can be Made Ahead of Time. Toyomansi can be made a day before serving and tastes better as the ingredients have a moment to marry together.

What is Toyomansi?
It’s a classic Filipino dipping sauce made of toyo (soy sauce) and calamansi (lime popular in South East Asian countries). You can customize the sauce by adding Thai red chili, aromatics, and some even add freshly cracked black pepper. It is salty and a little tangy and I can’t get enough of it.
Oftentimes this dipping sauce is paired with grilled dishes to amplify its flavor and it can double as a marinade, too!
Ingredients You Will Need
- Soy Sauce – Use light soy sauce, like this one.
- Lemon Juice – While it’s traditionally made with calamansi, lemon juice works as a fine substitute.
- Thai Red Chili – AKA bird’s eye chili added for a little kick (optional).
- Aromatics – Finely diced red onion and minced garlic (fresh and not bottled).

How to Make Toyomansi
What’s great about this toyomansi sauce is that it only takes 5 minutes to make. Best when made made ahead of time or just before serving.
- Dice red onion and Thai red chili and place in a bowl.
- Add soy sauce and lemon juice (or calamansi if you can get your hands on some) and stir.
- Serve!
Toyomansi Dipping Sauce Uses
These are some of my personal favorite dishes to pair with the dipping sauce:
- Pork Belly Lechon
- Sinangag- Filipino Garlic Rice
- Pancit Canton
- Arroz Caldo
- Filipino Beef Adobo
- Filipino Chicken Adobo

Other ways to enjoy:
- Siomai
- Grilled meats
- Steamed or grilled fish and seafood
Tips and Tricks
- Make it ahead of time. This will give the sauce time for the flavors to marry.
- Customize to your liking. If you have soy sauce and lemon juice, you’ll be good to go, but additions of garlic, shallots and chili will take the flavor of this dip up a notch.
- Make a batch. And keep it on the table so it’s ready to go.
