Oven-Baked BBQ Ribs

How do you achieve fall-off-the-bone ribs without a smoker or grill? The answer: slow-cooking in an oven. As a friednly reminder, you don’t need a grill to enjoy BBQ ribs!
I put these babies in the oven for 3½ hours at 250°F and finish them off with BBQ sauce 30 minutes before pulling them out of the oven. The result: utter deliciousness!

Oven Baked BBQ Ribs are easy to make

Many think that a lot of effort goes into achieving fall-off-the-bone ribs, but for this recipe, all you need is time, patience, and these few steps:

  1. Clean the ribs
  2. Remove the membrane
  3. Generously apply the rub
  4. Cover and cook in the oven at 250°F for 3 hours
  5. After 3 hours, lather with BBQ sauce and increase the heat to 275°F and cook for 30 minutes
  6. Remove from oven, rest for 25 minutes, slice, and serve
    That’s it!

How to remove the membrane

Removing the membrane from the ribs is a simple, and not-to-be-missed step. Leaving it on my result in a tough and chewy film left on the ribs. Below is a quick-step process in how to remove the membrane:

  1. Using a dinner knife, slide knife under the white membrane and over the bone;
  2. Carefully lift the membrane with the knife until you have enough to grib with your hand;
  3. Grab the edge of the membrane and pull until you reach the end of the rack. Discard membrane.

Sweet and Tangy BBQ Sauce

My dad, a Southern man from Atlanta, Georgia, was known for many great things, one of them being how well he was able to throw down in the kitchen.

I recall summer nights as a youngin’ eating slow-cooked ribs lathered in my dad’s finger-licking-good BBQ sauce. His rendition included the addition of liquid smoke, giving the sauce a nice oomph in taste mixed with a little tang from the apple cider vinegar.

Not only is this Sweet and Tangy BBQ Sauce great on ribs–go ahead and lather this goodness on grilled veggies, chicken, hot links, or whatever your heart desires! You can thank me later.

You can make this while the ribs are cooking–it’s simple to make and tastes better than the bottled version you get at the store.

Ingredients

  • 2-2½ lb rack of St. Louis style ribs
  • 1½ tsp kosher salt
  • 1¼ tsp pepper
  • 1 tsp pimenton or smoked paprika
  • ¾ cup BBQ sauce

Instructions

  • In a small bowl add salt, pepper and pimenton. This will be your rub.
  • Remove membrane from rack.
  • Generously season ribs with rub and marinate for at least 3-4 hours. Best if marinated overnight.
  • Preheat oven to 250°F. Place ribs on a baking sheet and into oven once preheat is complete.
  • Cook for 3 hours.
  • At the 3 hour mark, increase oven heat to 275°F and brush ribs with BBQ sauce. After 15 minutes, add another coat of bbq sauce to the ribs. Cook for another 15 minutes and remove from oven.
  • Optional: For nice, slightly crisp ribs, switch oven setting to broil. Place ribs on top rack (if broiler is at the top of oven) and cook for 1-2 minutes. Keep an eye on the ribs so as to not burn them.
  • Remove from oven and let rest for 25 minutes before slicing.
