Iced matcha lattes are one of my favorite drinks when I want something cool and refreshing. I love the vibrant green color, the smooth, creamy texture, and that clean, earthy flavor that comes through with every sip.

There’s something really satisfying about whisking the matcha until it’s frothy and watching it swirl into the milk, and it’s a drink I can enjoy any time of day without overthinking it. I’ve also noticed matcha everywhere lately, especially on TikTok, where people are sharing matcha drinks made at home in every variation imaginable.

Why This Iced Matcha Latte Recipe Works

  • Affordable – Skip the coffee shop prices and enjoy the same high-quality ingredients at home. Being your own barista means getting the best flavor without the markup.
  • Customizable – Use your favorite milk and adjust the sweetness to match your taste. You can even experiment with different matcha varieties to find the perfect balance.
  • Easy and Quick – No fancy equipment is needed. Just a whisk, a strainer, and a few minutes to create a smooth, frothy, and refreshing iced matcha.

What is Matcha?

Matcha is a finely ground green tea powder made from shade-grown tea leaves. Instead of being steeped and removed like regular tea, it’s whisked directly into water. Originating in Japan, matcha has a bolder flavor and slightly more caffeine than green tea, but usually less than a cup of coffee. Its smooth texture and vibrant color make it especially well-suited for drinks like iced matcha lattes.

Tools You’ll Need

Ingredients You Will Need for an Iced Matcha Latte

Here is a breakdown of what you will need to make this recipe. For actual measurements, see the recipe card at the end of this post.

Matcha

  • Ceremonial grade matcha – This is the best quality matcha. It has the purest flavor and is rich in antioxidants. Choose your favorite matcha, just make sure it’s ceremonial grade. If you’re looking for options, I love this one by Ippodo Tea and this one by Rocky’s Matcha.
  • Hot water – Dissolve the matcha powder in water between 190-195°F. This is how we ensure the powder is velvety smooth and not gritty.

For Matcha Tea Latte

  • Milk – Use whole milk, oat, or almond, depending on your preference.
  • Maple syrup – A natural sweetener that balances the slight bitterness of matcha.
  • 12-ounce cup – Fill with ice before adding the matcha mixture.

Milk Options for Your Iced Matcha Latte

  • Whole milk – Creates a rich, creamy texture that balances matcha’s earthy flavor.
  • Oat milk – A smooth, plant-based option that pairs especially well with matcha; I like using Minor Figures or Koatji.
  • Almond milk – Lighter and slightly nutty, making it a good dairy-free choice if you prefer a less creamy latte.

How To Make Iced Matcha Latte

Below is a summary of how to make an iced matcha latte. For a complete and detailed list of steps, see the recipe card at the end of this post.

Whisk the Matcha

I start by heating my water to about 190–195°F. I sift the matcha into a bowl to remove any clumps, then add the hot water. Using a matcha whisk, I whisk in a quick “M” motion until the matcha is smooth and lightly frothy.

Build the Latte

I fill a 12-ounce glass with ice and pour in my milk of choice. I add maple syrup and adjust the sweetness to taste. Finally, I pour the whisked matcha over the milk and give it a gentle stir.

Serve and Enjoy

Once everything is mixed, it’s ready to drink. The result is creamy, refreshing, and perfectly balanced every time.

Tips for the Best Iced Matcha Latte

  • Use hot water to mix the matcha. Hot water helps fully dissolve the powder and brings out its flavor, while cold water can leave the matcha grainy.
  • Sift the matcha before whisking. This step prevents clumps and makes it much easier to achieve a smooth, frothy mixture.
  • Sweeten after tasting. Matcha varies in bitterness depending on the brand, so it’s best to adjust the sweetness once everything is mixed.
  • Choose your sweetener based on taste. Maple syrup is a great natural option, but honey, vanilla syrup, pistachio syrup, or simple syrup all work, depending on how sweet you like your latte.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is an iced matcha latte high in caffeine?

A matcha latte has less caffeine than coffee but more than a standard cup of green tea. On average, a serving of matcha green tea powder contains about 70 milligrams of caffeine, providing a smooth, sustained energy boost without the jitters.

Is it safe to drink matcha every day?

Yes, matcha can be enjoyed daily in moderation. Because it contains caffeine, it’s best to pay attention to how your body responds and adjust your intake based on your tolerance.

Why is Gen Z obsessed with matcha?

Matcha checks a lot of boxes for Gen Z. It looks good on camera, feels customizable, and fits easily into café culture without always centering coffee. The fact that it can be made at home in endless ways has only made it more popular.

Can I use a regular whisk instead of a matcha whisk?

A traditional bamboo matcha whisk (chasen) works best for creating a fine froth and fully dissolving the matcha. If you don’t have one, a small electric frother or even shaking the matcha and hot water in a sealed jar can work as an alternative.
