  • Anytime Treat – This mix is easy to keep on hand in a jar, making it perfect for holidays, camping trips, fireside nights, or snow days.
  • Better Ingredients – Unlike store-bought packets, this version skips additives and fillers, relying on real chocolate and cocoa powder for a more balanced flavor.
  • Easy to Make – Once the mix is blended, all that’s left to do is heat milk and stir, which makes this just as convenient as anything pre-made but far more satisfying.

What’s the difference between hot cocoa and hot chocolate?

Hot cocoa is typically made with cocoa powder, sugar, and milk, while hot chocolate is made by melting actual chocolate into milk. This recipe leans toward hot cocoa, but because it uses real chopped chocolate along with cocoa powder, it delivers a richer flavor closer to hot chocolate. The result is a smooth, chocolate-forward drink that bridges the gap between the two.

Tools You’ll Need

Ingredients You Will Need for Hot Cocoa Mix

Here is a breakdown of what you will need to make this hot cocoa recipe. For actual measurements, see the recipe card at the end of this post.

  • Semisweet Chocolate (64%) – Using real chopped chocolate gives the mix depth and body that cocoa powder alone can’t achieve, creating a more rounded chocolate flavor once dissolved in milk.
  • Milk Powder – This adds creaminess and structure to the mix, helping it dissolve smoothly while giving the cocoa a richer mouthfeel without needing cream.
  • Dutch-Process Cocoa Powder – Dutch-processed cocoa brings a mellow, refined chocolate flavor with less acidity, which keeps the final drink balanced and cohesive.
  • Kosher Salt (Diamond Crystal) – A small amount sharpens the chocolate flavor and prevents the cocoa from tasting flat or one-dimensional.
  • Sugar – Sweetens the mix just enough to balance the cocoa and chocolate, allowing the chocolate notes to come through rather than overpowering them.

How To Make Hot Cocoa Mix

Below is a summary of how to make homemade hot cocoa mix. For a complete and detailed list of steps, see the recipe card at the end of this post.

Make the Cocoa Mix (Big Batch)

I add the chopped semisweet chocolate, milk powder, Dutch-process cocoa, sugar, and kosher salt to a food processor. I blend everything until the mixture turns into a fine, uniform powder with no visible chunks of chocolate. Once blended, I transfer the cocoa mix to an airtight jar or container and store it at room temperature until ready to use. This batch makes enough mix for multiple mugs, making it a reliable pantry staple during colder months.

How to Make Hot Cocoa (1 Serving)

For a single mug, I heat 1 cup of whole milk in a small saucepan just until steam starts to rise. I whisk in 1 to 2 tablespoons of the hot cocoa mix, depending on how strong I want it. I keep whisking until the cocoa fully dissolves and the milk is smooth and evenly blended. From there, it’s ready to pour and finish with marshmallows or whipped cream if desired.

How to Make Hot Cocoa (2 Servings)

When making two mugs, I heat 2 cups of whole milk over gentle heat until steaming. I whisk in ⅓ cup of the hot cocoa mix, stirring until everything dissolves completely. The cocoa should look smooth and cohesive, with no graininess from the sugar or cocoa. I divide it between two mugs and serve immediately.

Tips and Tricks

  • Use high-quality chocolate. Since this mix relies heavily on chopped chocolate, choosing a good-quality bar makes a noticeable difference in flavor and texture once it’s melted into milk.
  • Blend until very fine. Processing the ingredients into a powder ensures the mix dissolves smoothly, without graininess or unmelted bits at the bottom of the mug.
  • Store it airtight. An airtight container keeps the mix dry and prevents clumping, so it stays fresh and ready to scoop whenever you want hot cocoa.
  • Heat the milk gently. Warming the milk just until steaming helps the cocoa mix dissolve evenly without scorching or affecting the flavor.
  • Adjust to taste by the spoonful. Start with the suggested amount per serving, then add more mix if you want a stronger chocolate presence.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does hot cocoa mix expire?

Hot cocoa mix doesn’t spoil quickly, but it can lose flavor over time. When stored in an airtight container in a cool, dry place, this homemade mix stays fresh for up to 6 months. Moisture exposure is the biggest risk, so keeping it sealed is key.

Does hot cocoa have caffeine?

Yes, hot cocoa contains a small amount of caffeine from the cocoa powder and chocolate. The amount is much lower than coffee and generally mild, making it suitable for most people to enjoy in the evening.

Can I adjust the sweetness of this hot cocoa mix?

Yes, this mix is easy to customize. If you prefer less sweetness, reduce the sugar slightly and let the chocolate and cocoa take the lead. You can also sweeten individual mugs to taste once the cocoa is mixed with milk.
