Big Mac tacos are seasoned ground beef, smashed onto flour tortillas. Add a sprinkle of salt and fry them up. Then add classic toppings like American cheese, shredded lettuce, diced onions, and the iconic McDonald’s Big Mac sauce for an enticing collision of savory, tangy, and rich flavors. After just one bite of these juicy burgers encased with crispy tortillas, you’ll want to devour the rest!

Why This Big Mac Taco Recipe Works

  • Easy to Make – Simply press ground beef against a flour tortilla and add them to a hot grill or pan. These are ready in just 15 minutes!
  • Indulgent Can’t decide if it’s Taco Tuesday or a burger night? Have the best of both worlds!
  • Versatile – Have fun dressing it up with cheese, sauce, and other toppings.

Tools You’ll Need

Ingredients You Will Need for Big Mac Tacos

Take the bold flavor of a Big Mac burger and wrap it up into a tortilla to get this delicious fusion!

  • Flour tortillas – Use these in place of standard burger buns. Make sure they are street taco size.
  • Ground beef – 80/20 portioned into 2-ounce balls.
  • American cheese – Slice them in half so they fit on your tacos.
  • Little gem lettuce – Thinly sliced.
  • White onion – Diced.
  • Butter pickle slices – These add a sweet, tangy flair.
  • Kosher salt – I always use the Diamond Crystal brand.

Big Mac Sauce

  • Quality mayo – I use Hellman’s mayonnaise.
  • Butter pickles – Finely chopped. I like using this over dill pickles for the slight sweetness it adds to the sauce.
  • Mustard – For a zesty flavor.
  • Butter pickle brine – For a distinct tangy flavor.
  • Seasoning – I use onion powder, garlic powder, and smoked paprika (this gives it that speckled appearance).

Big Mac Tacos

  1. Heat a cast-iron skillet over high heat.
  2. Place one ground beef ball in the center of one tortilla. Generously season the top with kosher salt.
  3. Place the ball salt-face down on the hot cast-iron skillet (along with the tortilla on top) then use a burger smasher and smash it until it is about ⅛-inch thick. Immediately, lower the heat to medium-low or low. Cook for 3 minutes or until cooked through. If your skillet is big enough, cook two at a time. Conversely, if you have a flat-top griddle, you can use that and cook a lot more at a time. After every two tacos, discard some of the oil (I use a paper towel in order to absorb the oil) as you don’t want the tortilla to get saturated in too much fat.

4. Once cooked, transfer to a plate then top with half a slice of American cheese.

5. Top with the desired amount of big mac sauce, lettuce, onions, two pickles, and more sauce. Finally, enjoy!

Tips and Tricks

  • Stick to flour tortillas for this recipe. They are more flexible than corn tortillas and taste more similar to hamburger buns.
  • It’s okay if the patty is smashed beyond the size of the tortilla because the thin layer of meat will shrink.
  • The beef patties cook quickly. They are thin and only take about 3 minutes to cook through so don’t walk away or you risk burning them and the tortilla.
  • Immediately add cheese to the Big Mac tacos after removing them from the heat. The cheese melts easily while it’s fresh off the stove.
  • These are best enjoyed fresh. But you can store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days. Reheat them over medium heat on the stovetop.

Variations

  • Cheese You can use any cheese you prefer, including cheddar cheese or a Mexican blend, but American cheese is ideal.
  • Protein This recipe calls for using 80/20 ground beef, which means it has 20% fat. If you want to use leaner meat, go for a 85/15 ground beef blend. The the tastiest burger tacos, use ground chuck.
  • More Add-Ins Lean more into the taco aspect of this recipe and add jalapeños, or swap the Big Mac sauce for guacamole.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Thousand Island dressing the same as Big Mac sauce?

No. Thousand Island dressing contains ketchup. And although many believe that McDonald’s special sauce contains ketchup, the original recipe does not.

What is the Big Mac sauce made of?

It contains sweet relish, distilled vinegar, salt, egg yolks, garlic powder, onion powder, turmeric, paprika extract, and other preservatives and additives.

Do you put oil on the griddle for smash burgers?

This smash burger taco recipe does not require oil. The fat in the ground beef yields enough grease.

How do you smash a burger without a smasher?

If you don’t have a burger press, just use a spatula.
